Government. Tunisia Currently Has A Parliamentary Republic
Government Tunisia currently has a parliamentary republic form of government. There have been multiple constitutions enacted in Tunisia, the most recent and current one was approved by the Constituent Assembly on January 26, 2014 and signed by the president on January 27, 2014. The capital of the country is Tunis. The legal system in Tunisia is a mixture of civil law, based on the French civil code, and Islamic law. The government is broken down into three different branches, the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch. There are roughly 20 political parties actively working and representing constituents within Tunisia. The two largest parties are Tunisia s Call and al-Nahda. The next election is scheduled to be held in 2019. The election results per political party are as follow: 39.6% Tunisia s Call, 31.8% al-Nahda, 7.4% UPL, 6.9% Popular Front, 3.7% Afek Tounes, 1.8% CPR, 8.8% other. This resulted in the following breakdown of seats per party: 86 seats for Tunisia s Call, 69 seats for al-Nahda, 16 seats for UPL, 15 seats for Popular Front, 8 seats for Afek Tounes, 4 seats for CPR 4, 17 seats for ââ¬Å"otherâ⬠, and 2 seats for independent representatives. The Judicial Branch consists of the Court of Cassation or Cour de Cassation which is the highest court in Tunisia. It is divided into 1 civil and 3 criminal chambers. There is also the Constitutional Court. The new constitution of Tunisia created the Constitutional Court that was to begin by the end of 2015. The court will consist of 12 members. The members will each serve 9-year terms. One-third of the membership will be renewed every 3 years. The International Commission of Jurists requested that Tunisia s parliament revise the Constitutional Court to ensure compliance with international standards in 2015.
